Building Backlinks are a crucial part of off page SEO and whether you are a new blog or established business there’s no doubt that links are an important ranking factor in SEO.

But I strongly feel that there is a lot of misinformation when it comes to making backlinks for your website and staying on the safe side of google.

However, while these links can help you in increasing traffic and conversions, you have to follow certain untold guidelines. So you don’t go overboard and penalized your website. So, this takes us to the question – How many backlinks per day is safe?

While there is no simple answer to this question but certainly there are do’s and don’ts that we are going to address in this post. “ But the short answer is there is no fixed number “.

Well the short answer after years of experience in this field is 25-30 backlinks can be considered safe if you have a medium level website. Now what exactly is a “ Medium Level Website” its a term that i generally use for categorising different levels of sites. 

Different Level Of Websites : –

1. Entry Level Website – These websites are generally 1-6 months old sites with DA (Domain Authority) ranging from 1-10. 
   • So let’s consider you have a new website so it’s safe to make around 10-12 backlinks a day that are of high quality. These backlinks will basically help you in getting your site index faster. Making manual backlinks in bulk will raise negative signals to search engines and that won’t be good for your website.
2. Mid Level Website – Any website that is 1-2 years old can be considered a mid level website. DA ranging from 10-30. 
   • Websites of this range can go for around 25-30 links a day and that too depends upon various factors. I will discuss some of them later in this post.

3. Mid – High Website – These sites range from 3-5 years old domain range with a fair authority of around DA 50.
   • Low quality links will harm your website at this stage. So it’s better to only stick to high quality and authoritative links. For the most part making high quality links is really hard so building such links on a daily basis is no easy task. 
   • Because most of the time you’ll end up paying for the link. And believe me those backlinks are not cheap.

4. High Level Website – Any website with DA of more than 70 and above can be considered a high level or authoritative website and to be honest if you are searching for this then you need to change your SEO guy. Lol, just kidding.

The above mentioned method is not recommended by search engines or documented anywhere, it’s just what I have learned over the years. I have also seen companies build over 100+ links a day and that works for them in some way. 

So a thumb rule that you can follow from this is that if you have a new website stick to a small number at the beginning and you can scale the number once your website starts to grow so that it won’t look suspicious.

Link building is just not about numbers, it is about quality that matters the most. It’s not a one time job that you can do once and forget about it. 

Link building takes time and it is important that you take your time making links and you should be very selective about what type of links are pointed towards your site. Because that’s what distinguishes a good link building campaign from a failed one.

1. Niche Relevant Backlinks

If your links are coming from a site that is a lot similar to yours that makes a lot of sense in the eyes of google. For example if you have a website that is related to fishing hooks and you get a backlink from a real estate website that wont look natural unless the page from which you are getting a link from is really about fishing hooks. So it becomes really important that you always try to get links from websites in your niche.

So the goal here is to reach the right audience while maintaining high relevance to avoid any penalty by google.

2. Check Website’s Profile

Profiling a website initially ensures that you are moving in the right direction. Before making links on any website you should always check the website authority such as Ahref’s (Domain Rating) and Moz’s DA (Domain Authority). 

These parameters are influenced mainly by the quality and total number of backlinks that a domain has. The higher the number, the better. You can check how ahref calculate domain rating from their official blog.

The other thing that you can check is the types of keywords a domain is ranking for and this step will pretty much clear everything for you. 

Here a quick checklist for profiling domain:- 

1. Check for DA or DR higher is better.
2. Check backlinks profile and look for authority sites.
3. Check for keywords they are ranking for. 
4. Look for spam score.
5. If your site is country specific you can look for GEO.

3. Start Slow

Avoid building a huge number of links in the early stage of a website. Because it is not natural for a new website to gain links in such numbers. Instead wait till your website is growing naturally and then you can gradually ramp up your link building efforts. So that you can also deter any suspension. 

4. Avoid Spammy Links

It is often said a backlink from an authority site is equal to 1000 low quality links. Always try to get links from authority websites. Initially that will be hard to achieve but as your website reputation and credibility increase you will start to see some positive response.

Also avoid PBN’s and freelancers link builders from fiver and similar places at any cost. These types of links are definitely bad news so it is best to stay away from them.
